New endowment honors brewing science emeritus professor Michael J. Lewis
To recognize Dr. Michael J. Lewis, the UC Davis Department of Food Science and Technology has created a new endowed fund, named in honor of Professor Michael J. Lewis, and dedicated to supporting UC Davis brewing science students.
USDA discovery award recognizes rice research
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has given one of its highest research awards to UC Davis rice geneticist Pamela Ronald and two other scientists in recognition of their work developing new rice varieties that can withstand flooding. The Discovery Award, which recognizes outstanding researchers who address key agricultural problems of national, regional, and multistate importance, was presented Dec. 5 at UC Riverside by Gale A. Buchannan, the USDA's undersecretary for research, education and economics.

R. Paul Singh, distinguished professor of food engineering at the University of California, Davis, whose research has applications in areas ranging from food processing to space exploration, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. This is one of the highest professional distinctions for engineers in the United States.
Bonnie Fernandez named to lead Produce Safety Center at UC Davis
Wheat industry executive Bonnie Fernandez has been selected as the director of the Center for Produce Safety at UC Davis. "She will help establish the critical partnerships that provide a safe food supply, from the farm to the consumer's table," said Neal Van Alfen, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
Bruce Eldridge receives international medal for medical entomology
Professor emeritus Bruce Eldridge, a medical entomologist, has been awarded the international Harry Hoogstraal Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Entomology. He is one of only 15 entomologists ever to receive the award, and the third at UC Davis.

Plant sciences professor Kent Bradford named “Outstanding Faculty”
Professor Kent J. Bradford, Department of Plant Sciences, was recently honored as “Outstanding Faculty” with a 2007 Award of Distinction from the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. His research on seed biology led to development of the UC Davis Seed Biotechnology Center, and helped earn him a position as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Bradford is recognized as an exceptional leader by colleagues and students.
Jorge Dubcovsky earns “Discovery Award” from USDA for wheat research
UC Davis plant sciences professor Jorge Dubcovsky was honored Friday, Oct. 12, with the 2007 National Research Initiative “Discovery Award” from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for his genetics research enhancing the nutritional value of wheat. Dubcovsky's research offers a potential solution to nutritional deficiencies affecting hundreds of millions of children around the world. Only one Discovery Award is made each year -- it recognizes outstanding researchers in agriculture.
