Who is in the Undeclared/Exploratory Program?
Students that want to learn more about themselves and explore a wide array of academic options.
The term "exploratory" describes a pre-major advising program designed to assist students with the process of discovering the wide variety of academic opportunities and programs available while, at the same time, helping define and focus academic interests.
Many students discover a change of interests and goals as the multitude of major options offered in the college become more familiar. This process of recognition and development leads to an exciting discovery of personal interests, potential and aspirations. More importantly, the Exploratory Program provides a professionally guided exploration process of academic and personal transition and development.
Advisers help with this exploration of options and identification of
areas of interest while assuring successful academic progress toward the
completion of a Baccalaureate Degree. To begin this process, it is
important to know what resources are available.
How Shall I begin?
- Consider registering for the Career Discovery Group program. In this program, you will work with experts in the Internship and Career Center and graduate student mentors to explore a rainbow array of career pathways.
- Consider participating in an
academic theme program or in a living-learning community in the residence halls.
- Participate in special activities during Fall Welcome.
- Take a look at a sample first-year class schedule
What Should I do once I arrive on campus?
- During your first quarter, meet with an academic counselor or peer adviser in the Dean's Office (Room 150, Mrak Hall) to create a three quarter plan for academic exploration. This plan may include many different general education courses, such as those in the Science and Society program. These type of courses let you explore many topics and potential majors while earning general education credits towards graduation.
- Meet with a staff adviser in a departmental advising center to discuss specific majors you are considering.
- Join clubs and organizations where you can meet student colleagues who share your interests. Consider becoming an Aggie Ambassador.
- Visit the Internship and Career Center (ICC) and speak with experts in career development. Visit their website to explore internship and research opportunities related to your areas of interest.
- Refer to the General Catalog or the Preparatory Subject Matter at a Glance (available in the Dean's Office) to understand the similarities in the requirements for many different majors.
- Take a closer look at the CA&ES website in the student section to learn more about each of 30 majors.
