Scientists explore stress, weight loss, and our brain
June 13, 2013

It’s not just our imagination: We really do eat differently when we’re stressed. Nutritionists at UC Davis are shedding light on the important link between stress, our brain and body weight, discoveries that could help society fight obesity and improve our individual efforts to lose weight and keep it off.

Postgraduate Certificate in International Agricultural Development

Host Department

Woman with milk jugsPlant Sciences

Statement of Program Aim

The International Agricultural Development major in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis, in collaboration with UC Davis Extension, offers a 12-month certificate program to provide current knowledge and research experience. The certificate program is intended for those students who wish to continue their education in international agricultural development beyond the Bachelor of Science degree, but do not desire the additional research emphasis of a formal graduate degree. In particular, international students may find the structure of a one-year certificate program ideal to advance their training in the disciplines related to international agricultural development. Depending upon the student's interest, the emphasis in training can be individually tailored to agricultural economics, agronomy, animal science, community development or environmental science. This training will combine coursework, laboratory instruction and possibly fieldwork in international agricultural development and related disciplines.

Maximum Enrollment

None.

Student Prerequisites

A TOEFL score of 550 or better is required for nonnative English speakers. Applicants are expected to have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in international agricultural development or a related discipline. Assessment of the qualifications of international students is often complicated by the difference in educational systems across countries. Applicants are expected to submit official transcripts in English before the application can be processed.

Suggested Courses

The certificate program in International Agricultural Development is intended to be a flexible course of instruction allowing the student to focus on that area of international agricultural development most closely aligned with the student's educational objective. There are no specific course requirements expected of all certificate students. Students in the certificate program will be allowed to choose their coursework from a list provided by the program and in conjunction with the graduate adviser and the faculty mentor. The Davis campus has a wide variety of coursework available, however, the graduate adviser must approve the student's program of study prior to final admission. This step is essential in order to ensure completion of the program within 12 months, because some courses must be taken in sequence and are only offered once each year.

For those students electing to obtain research experience to fulfill part of the certificate requirements, in consultation with the faculty adviser, the appropriate number (maximum of 6 units) of IAD 298 units (which are used to satisfy independent research 299 units) may be taken.

Students are required to choose one IAD core course from IAD 200N, IAD 201N and IAD 202N.
