Postgraduate Certificate in Plant Pathology

Host Department

LeafPlant Pathology

Statement of Program Aim

The Department of Plant Pathology, University of California, Davis, in collaboration with UC Davis Extensionn, offers a 6 to 12 month certificate program. The program is designed to meet the need of advanced students for specialized training through course, laboratory and field work in plant pathology and related disciplines. The program has considerable flexibility and can be tailored to an individual's interest and prior experience. Thus, a program may emphasize one or more major plant pathogen groups: bacteria and phytoplasmas, fungi or viruses. Training may include:

  • Molecular methods for the study of host-parasite interactions or detection and characterization of plant pathogens

  • Ecology of plant pathogens

  • Disease diagnosis

  • Epidemiology and control of plant diseases.

Direct experience in research laboratories can be arranged provided faculty members within a given specialty have sufficient space and resource to make this accommodation. The students will initiate their study in the fall and take a minimum of six units per quarter.

Student Prerequisites

A TOEFL score of 550 or better is required of all nonnative English speakers. Students are expected to have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in biology or agricultural-related fields.
