Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Adequate English skills are essential to successful completion of the postgraduate certificate program. The English requirements for the postgraduate certificate program are as follows.
-
TOEFL score of 550 or better.
-
In addition to the TOEFL, students whose language of instruction was not English will be required to take an English assessment test prior to their first registration.
-
Students may be assigned additional English courses dependent upon the outcome of the exam.
-
To register for the English assessment exam, please contact Janet Lane at jrlane@ucdavis.edu or (530) 754-6357.
-
Students whose language of instruction was not English and attended another institution in the United States students will be exempt from taking the TOEFL.
-
If the TOEFL score indicates a weakness in the language, students may be required to enroll in special English courses.
-
If the TOEFL score is between 520 and 550, the department/sponsoring faculty member may recommend to the director of International Programs that the student be admitted.
-
In the event that a student scores below 520 on the TOEFL, the student can apply to UC Davis Extension's Intensive English Program.
At the conclusion of the Intensive English Program, the student is given an "institutional" TOEFL. While a high percentage of students pass this test, it is not a guarantee of admittance into the postgraduate certificate program. The instructor(s) may recommend that the student enroll in additional English courses while working on their postgraduate certificate.
