Gary Anderson has received nearly every teaching award offered on the UC Davis campus — including the Academic Senate’s Distinguished Teaching Award, the UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement, and the Magnar Ronning Teaching Award. His teaching excellence has also been recognized nationally with several major awards. Anderson has mentored 16 Ph.D. students, 40 M.S. students, and countless undergraduates, who warmly remember his expectations of excellence from himself and his students.
Chair of the Department of Animal Science, 1998–2005, Dr. Anderson’s innovative research on embryonic transfer in livestock has earned him major awards from the American Society of Animal Science and the American Dairy Association. He serves on the editorial boards of several national professional societies in the animal sciences.
Anderson’s excellence in teaching and research have earned him the prestigious UC Davis “Distinguished Professor” title. His lifetime of service to UC Davis and the agricultural industries in California exemplify his devotion to outstanding research and teaching.

President and CEO of Pacific GeoPRO, Bruce Berkman heads the Asia-Pacific region’s first and only regional provider of geospatial services, covering markets in 20 international countries. In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Berkman is devoted to sustainable development and environmental protection and conservation in Asia.
Berkman serves on the board of the Jane Goodall Institute in Taiwan, supporting grass-roots conservation efforts and a sustainable development science education program. Berkman has also served as board member of the Taiwan Orangutan Foundation, helping conservationists collect and rehabilitate endangered orangutans.
Berkman’s passion for the environment was used to help set environmental quality standards in Taiwan and greater China. Bruce Berkman’s commitment to leadership in environmental management, his entrepreneurial achievement, and his concern with social equity — in place from his student days at UC Davis to his current international achievements — bring distinction to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

A member of the Department of Food Science and Technology for 38 years, Carol Cooper moved from her role as department librarian to undergraduate academic advisor. She helps food science majors complete their academic requirements, prepare for careers and graduate school, and obtain scholarships and internships. She is also advisor to the department’s Food Tech Club, and volunteers with many other student activities.
Cooper has received numerous awards for her outstanding commitment to students, including the UC Davis Staff Assembly “Citation for Excellence,” the CA&ES Walker Award for Outstanding College Advising, and the Outstanding Staff Advisor Award from the Academic Peer Advising Program.
Carol Cooper is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), contributing at the statewide and national levels to the professional society. She received two major awards from IFT — the Elizabeth Fleming Stier Award, for pursuit of humanitarian ideals and unselfish dedication, and the Outstanding Member of the Year award from the Northern California section of IFT. Few UC Davis staff members match Carol Cooper’s ongoing excellence and devotion.

Richard Cotta is president and CEO elect of California Dairies, Inc., a dairy cooperative of 680 dairies with annual sales of $2.5 billion. He focuses on environmental stewardship and dairy quality assurance. He has held numerous leadership positions with professional organizations including the U.S. Dairy Export Council, the National Holstein Foundation, Dairy America, the Alliance of Western Milk Producers, the California Dairy Research Foundation, and Western United Dairymen.
In addition to his professional work in agriculture, Cotta is an ardent supporter of the research and outreach activities of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at UC Davis. He has served on the Dean’s Advisory Council for 12 years, and actively supports the animal science department’s Dairy Cattle Day through regular presentations and financial support. He is also a member of the Animal Science Development Board in the animal science department.
Richard Cotta believes in the importance of research to the sustainability of agriculture within California, and he is one of the College’s most outspoken supporters of our accomplishments and the importance of discovery to the future of agriculture.

Now president and general manager of KVIE for eight years, Dr. David Hosley has been in public broadcasting for twenty years, working in radio and television journalism in California, New York, and Florida. He is the author of two books on broadcast journalism.
Hosley has embraced regional planning in the Sacramento Valley, serving as a volunteer for many local and regional organizations. He is a board member of Valley Vision, the Sacramento Metro Chamber, the Sacramento Asian-Pacific Chamber of Commerce, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Center. He is well connected in his links with organizations, local leaders, politicians, businesspersons, and the pulse of the community.
David Hosley works tirelessly to help the broader community better understand the valuable contributions that UC Davis and the college have made to the public. He serves as vice chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and he is a member of the UC Davis Foundation’s board of trustees. David Hosley is a champion of community development at every level.

Gary Hudson is founder and president of Hudson & Associates, a consulting firm that advises businesses in the horticultural industry on strategic planning, management issues, and market plan development and implementation. His professional accomplishments are many, including election to the American Academy of Floriculture, and receiving the International Award and the Award of Excellence from the national Professional Plant Growers’ Association
Hudson is a strong supporter of horticultural research and outreach at UC Davis. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and serves on the advisory council for the campus’s Seed Biotechnology Center. A proponent of community service, he runs a program to educate young entrepreneurs in the business world.
For the past several years Hudson has served as co-chair of the implementation committee for the new California Center for Urban Horticulture, a research and outreach center based at UC Davis that will provide programs and information to the citizens and horticultural industry in California. Gary Hudson’s contributions to the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and to community service are exemplary.

Serving as mayor of Tulare, California, is a natural fit for Richard Ortega, who ceaselessly works for the betterment of his community. He ran dairy farms for 34 years following his graduation from UC Davis and his service as a Captain in the U.S. Army. While a student at UC Davis, Ortega was editor of The California Aggie, and he competed on the dairy judging team. He has served as a Tulare city councilman since 2001, and as mayor of Tulare for the past two years.
Education is a primary concern for Richard Ortega. He served 17 years on the Tulare Joint Union High School board of trustees, and has served on many educational and community organizations. His has received many awards, including being named Tulare Man of the Year, and Tulare Farmer of the Year. Richard Ortega also volunteers each week with the building of Habitat for Humanity houses.
An avid supporter of the University of California, Richard Ortega is a charter member of the UC Davis Chancellor’s Club, he has served on the UC Davis Livestock Advisory Committee, and the board of directors of the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. His lifelong achievements were noted in his receiving the prestigious Jerry Fielder Award from the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

Herbert Stone is noted for his extraordinary professional accomplishments and his volunteer leadership positions in the food science industry. His company, Tragon Corporation, is a marketing research and sensory testing company with offices in California and Chicago. Dr. Stone also serves as an adjunct and visiting professor in China, and has worked with companies in more than 25 countries.
Stone recently finished serving as president of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), an international scientific organization. He is a fellow of IFT, and a member of the American Society of Enology and Viticulture. Herbert Stone has more than 130 publications, 6 patents, and is an associate editor of the Journal of Food Science and co-authored a pivotal book in sensory science.
Herbert Stone is very active in giving back to UC Davis. He is founding president of UC Davis’s Food Science Leadership Board in the Department of Food Science and Technology, and he is a strong supporter of the new Anheuser-Busch Brewing and Food Science Laboratory at UC Davis. Herbert Stone served on a special delegation from UC Davis to China and Hong Kong with the chancellor, exemplifying his endless sense of service and contribution to the university.
