Our college continued to play a big role in top rankings for UC Davis: #1 for agricultural sciences and forestry in the United States; #1 in the world for plant and animal sciences; #1 in agricultural economics and policy research; and #1 in the nation for research productivity and impact of our faculty in the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology.

New research by UC Davis child development experts in human ecology suggests that prenatal stress promotes developmental plasticity in babies, making them more likely to benefit from good parenting.

Celine, a champion quarter horse, was donated to UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

At an annual event, students had the opportunity to show their appreciation to donors who continue to provide crucial financial support for scholarships. Donors, in turn, were thrilled to meet with and learn about how their philanthropy is helping students achieve their goals.

Susan Harrison, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the highest honors a scientist can receive.

Professor Ermias Kebreab is conducting research with dairy cows to find out if seaweed used as a feed additive can reduce methane emissions from cows. Kebreab was recently named Associate Dean of Global Engagement and Director of the World Food Center.

Farmers got a first-hand look at variety trials underway at Small Grains Field Day.

Each year, almost 6,000 UC Davis students participate in internships. Community and regional development major Marissa Rodriguez was among them. She interned at the state Capitol with students from other UC campuses.

Three of the brewing industry’s professional organizations honored the “Pope of Foam” Charlie Bamforth with awards that speak to the distinguished professor’s lifetime of accomplishments.

In collaboration with UC Davis Cooperative Extension viticulture specialist Kaan Kurtural (right), Miguel Guerrero (left) of The Wine Group is experimenting with a “high-wire” viticultural practice that reduces the need for manual labor.

The college broke ground in October on a new dairy goat parlor and creamery adjacent to the existing Dairy Goat Teaching and Research Facility. The 2,420 square-foot facility will create opportunities to process fluid milk and make cheese with state-of-the-art equipment.

Another hallmark of the season is College Celebration, which began 30 years ago as a way to recognize individuals who have helped the college thrive and grow.

Lynette Williams, a Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology senior and museum intern, is about to release a female Lazuli bunting captured in a mist net at Bird Haven Ranch.

CA&ES recently boosted its agricultural research capabilities with major irrigation infrastructure improvements on 300 acres just west of Highway 113. The upgrades include five miles of new underground PVC piping, a pumping and filtering station and state-of-the-art control technology.

A group of 15 students volunteered at Soil Born Farms, an urban agriculture and education project in the Sacramento area. Our students planted garlic and weeded plots while learning about sustainable vegetable and fruit production.
