UC Davis Assistant Professor Mason Earles testified before Congress as an expert witness in Washington D.C. on the importance of AI technology in agriculture.

Frances C. Moore, associate professor with the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, served a one-year term as a senior economist with the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) in Washington, D.C. to provide objective economic analysis and policy recommendations for economic growth and stability.

Congratulations to Executive Assistant Dean Penny Herbert on her retirement! A fearless leader and strong advocate for staff and faculty, she led the CA&ES business and financial operations for seven years.

Several college faculty members authored books this year on topics including wildfire, transportation, landscape design, sustainable urban design and bees. Kudos to Patsy Eubanks Owens, Emily Schlickman, Brett Milligan and Stephen Wheeler in human ecology, Susan Handy from environmental science and policy and Brian Johnson in entomology and nematology!

Dean Helene Dillard announced she will retire in 2024 after leading the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for the past decade. Throughout her tenure, she has championed and embodied the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration to address the most pressing issues facing agriculture, the environment, and human and social needs. She leaves a long and lasting legacy.

CA&ES undergraduate students stopped by Mrak Hall to pick up free scantrons, snacks and college items during study break, one of the many student events organized throughout the year by Undergraduate Academic Programs.

The college welcomed hundreds of FFA and 4-H students last March to compete in 21 agriculturally based judging contests. Executive Associate Dean Anita Oberbauer was so excited she even dressed up for the special occasion in her own FFA jacket circa 1976-77.

From painting posters with different types of soils to enjoying soil-themed treats, students and faculty celebrated World Soil Day in unique and creative ways.

Animal Science Professor Huaijun Zhou received the National Academy of Sciences Prize in Food and Agriculture Sciences for his research on poultry genomes to help address food insecurity and climate change.

We got out the golden shovels to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new greenhouse. The $5.25 million project will safeguard an important grapevine collection from red blotch disease and other pathogens.

Distinguished Professor John Eadie with the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology was greeted by Chancellor Gary May, who announced Eadie as the winner of the UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement.

The Plant Agricultural Biology Graduate Admissions Pathways (PABGAP) program brought students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to UC Davis for seven immersive weeks of research, field work, training and mentoring.

Students explored the waterways in the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden while gathering samples to measure the water’s salinity and fecal coliform levels as part of a program providing hands-on experience in field work, data collection and analysis.

UC Davis graduate student Yuanxin Ji created a heartfelt hip hop song with lyrics about the intricate world of soil after completing a summer field course. During the course, students traveled to spots like Fort Bragg and Mono Lake to get hands-on experience digging soil pits and analyzing the soil’s physical properties and classification.

CA&ES led a group of students on a spring break service trip to Bodega Bay and Sonoma County. The student volunteers joined the Redwood Empire Food Bank to help package 15,000 pounds of donated food and assisted at other local organizations.

We celebrated several college alumni, friends, faculty and staff at the 2023 annual Award of Distinction reception. Among the awardees, Lisa Nash Holmes, was surrounded by supporters as she accepted her award for Exceptional Staff Member.

New students came to campus this fall and CA&ES was ready to welcome them to Davis. Our college helps new students feel connected by building community through groups such as Aggie Jumpstart, a program for first-generation, low-income and underserved students.

The Student Collaborative Organic Plant Breeding Education, or SCOPE, program shared their zinnia flowers during a field day at the UC Davis Student Farm.

In FST 160 Food Product Development, food science undergraduates gave the UC Davis community a taste of their original food creations, including upcycled noodles and a savory vegan waffle.

Ermias Kebreab and Matthias Hess are teaming up with UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco researchers on a $70-million donor-funded initiative that aims to cut methane emissions from cattle by using the genome-editing tool CRISPR on microbes in the cows’ gut.

We had yet another reason to celebrate! Venkatesan Sundaresan, a professor in plant sciences and plant biology, was elected as a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His laboratory conducts research on plant reproduction as well as host-microbiome interactions in roots.
