Animal Science Assistant Professor Matthias Hess and Nutrition Assistant Professor Angela Zivkovic have been awarded fellowships from the Hellman Foundation for the 2016–2017 academic year. Ten other UC Davis assistant professors are also among the new class of Hellman Fellows.

The foundation provides financial support and encouragement for the research of promising assistant professors who exhibit potential for great distinction in their research, and who have documented a need for funding. The fellowship is intended to support research and creative activities that will promote career advancement and progress toward tenure.

Fellows will be asked at a later date to make a presentation to Hellman Family Foundation members about the research and the impact that the award has made on their research progress. Zivkovic specializes in the development of tools and strategies to personalize health. Hess specializes in gastrointestinal microbiology and microbial processes in natural and artificial ecosystems.

The Hellman Fellows program, which began in 1994, now serves all 10 campuses of the University of California, three private universities, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Each institution makes its own selections.
