Glenn Young awarded Vietnamese Medal of Honor
Professor has helped develop curriculum in food technology
Department of Food Science and Technology Professor Glenn Young was awarded the Medal of Honor by the government of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The award was received at the recent 60th Anniversary Celebration of Nong Lam University.
Since 2007, the Department of Food Science and Technology has been working with Nong Lam University in a partnership to develop an English-based curriculum for its food technology major. Led by Professor Young, a Vietnam Education Foundation Scholar, the program has blossomed into a self-sustaining model for advanced education and a platform for research exchanges. This forward-looking UC Davis partnership has expanded to include numerous other activities over the past decade, including USAID-funded research on safe vegetable production and the establishment of Southeast Asian regional networks for building university capacity in developing countries.
The success of the food technology program has served to stimulate expansion of the UC Davis/Nong Lam University partnership to involve biotechnology, applied science and Southeast Asian Studies. In the coming year, UC Davis and Nong Lam University will mark the first decade of their partnership with a symposium on Sustainable Food and Agriculture (to be held in Vietnam).
