Igel, an assistant professor in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, specializes in cloud physics and atmospheric modeling. Igel completed her Ph.D. in atmospheric science at Colorado State University (CSU) and was a postdoctoral researcher at CSU before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2016.

I study clouds. Clouds generate precipitation, keep us cool during the day and warm at night, redistribute energy in the atmosphere, and transport atmospheric pollution. Through these processes, clouds impact our weather and climate.
Representing clouds in models remains one of our greatest challenges for predicting temperature, rainfall, and snowfall. My work focuses on better understanding the physics of clouds, revealing how clouds and atmospheric pollution interact, and improving the way clouds are included in models. This allows us to make more accurate predictions of both daily weather forecasts and long-term predictions of climate change.
