Tips for Building a Balanced Schedule

  • Before enrolling in lower division courses (numbered 001-099), California community college students should use ASSIST to determine course equivalency. UC Davis credit will not be given for duplicate coursework.
  • Build multiple fall schedules as a back-up plan in case you don’t get your first-choice schedule during your registration time.
  • If you are interested in other areas but don’t know where to start, consider taking introductory major courses numbered 001, 005, 010 (for example ESP 001, NAS 001, MUS 010 etc)
  • Enroll in no more than two major courses (science courses) and complement the rest of units with GE/electives
  • Enroll in no more than two writing intensive courses (denoted with WE). These courses usually require lots of reading and heavy writing assignments.
  • Don't take more than 15 units your first quarter. Remember, instructors will expect you to spend two-three hours in out-of-class preparation for every hour that you spend in class. Taking 15 units per quarter is a full-time job (15-unit course load implies 45 hours of work on your part every week (15 hours in class and 30 hours outside of class). You should consider this workload as you plan your first quarter).

Internships, Careers, Graduate Studies and Global Learning

  • As a transfer student, it is especially important to look ahead at your post-graduation goals and stay on track. Set up an appointment with the Career Center to begin exploring possible internship and career opportunities related to your major. Career interests may shape your interest in taking certain classes
  • Meet with your major and dean’s office advisor to talk about your academic plan and your goals for post-graduation. You may need to take specific pre-requisite classes if you plan to apply to graduate schools.
  • Learn more about studying abroad. You can also search and find the right study abroad, internships and global opportunities for you.
