A Message From the Dean - April 2023

After a cold and rainy winter, it’s heartwarming to see beautiful flowers blooming and hear birds chirping. Spring is a seasonal celebration of the natural beauty around us, especially on campus where rainbow chard is being harvested at the Student Farm, ducklings are waddling around the Arboretum and new foals are getting their footing at the Horse Barn.

We recently celebrated our prospective and current students, faculty, staff and our surrounding community with several events, including Aggie Day for first-year admits and the annual Picnic Day, which drew in thousands of visitors to campus.

I’m also thrilled to report that our recent UC Davis Give Day fundraising drive was a tremendous success! Thanks to the generosity of our community, the campus received nearly 5,000 gifts that so far has raised more than $3.3 million in support of important projects and programs across a broad range of disciplines. We are incredibly grateful to all our donors and supporters, who are empowering students and faculty to continue doing incredible work that has the potential to change the world.

In this month’s Highlights, we share news out of the Strawberry Breeding Program, which released five new strawberry varieties that are resistant to Fusarium wilt, a soilborne pathogen that can destroy crops. You will find a story about researchers who worked with the Winnemem Wintu tribe to name a newly identified subspecies of rainbow trout – “O. mykiss calisulat” or “beautiful trout.” We also have a doctoral student in entomology who is organizing a community nature event called BioBlitz to observe the plants, insects and animals in the region. And in case you missed it, singer Taylor Swift is getting some love from one of our Department of Plant Sciences professors, who developed a remarkable instrument that helps monitor plant traits, which he affectionately named “TSWIFT.”

I also want to congratulate our incoming transfer students, who were recently admitted to UC Davis and our college. I’m delighted to welcome them to our vibrant academic community.

Go Ags!
