Cochran Fellowship Program

For the last than 20 years, CA&ES Global Engagement has hosted approximately 100 Cochran programs in a variety of topics, ranging from water management, horticultural production, food safety, nutrition, dairy and beef, wine and spirits and beyond. It is an opportunity to extend globally-recognized university skills and knowledge to a greater audience while spotlighting California and U.S. agriculture and trade relations with other countries. Our continuing partnership with the Cochran programs enhances and strengthens longer-term ties with host country participants and their organizations, and opens up prospects for  research and grant opportunities and more.

Recent UC Davis completed programs of the Cochran Fellowship Program:

·Moldova- Smallholder Poultry Development. This program was custom-tailored to give participants a thorough and diverse overview of poultry management best practices as well as an overview of U.S. poultry management from local, state and federal levels with an emphasis on food safety and disease prevention. By engaging participants in the classroom as well as the field in a  range of topics such as animal welfare, biosecurity, and new technologies in poultry, the program provided an overview in raising healthy poultry corresponding to regulations. Our focus was NOT a one solution fits all approach as each poultry system is different based on the resources, terrain type of practice, and climate, rather we provided tools necessary for improving poultry systems so participants could make the appropriate fit for Moldova.

· Uzbekistan- Water Saving Technologies. Core emphasis of this two-week training centered on an overview of water management in water scarce conditions with an emphasis on water-smart technologies being employed. Fellows received an overview of management at the local, state and federal level with a variety of government and research institutions as well as private businesses. The course covered hands-on micro irrigation and sprinkler irrigation training giving fellows a sense of assessment, design and management of a system that best suits their individual needs.
