Miller, an assistant professor in the Department of Animal Science, specializes in animal genetics and genomics. Miller completed his Ph.D. in biology at the University of Oregon before joining the UC Davis faculty in 2013.

The earth’s biological diversity is being lost at an alarming rate. Genetic diversity underlies this biodiversity. Broadly speaking, I am interested in using genomic approaches to improve our understanding of biodiversity with the goal of helping to reduce or prevent biodiversity loss. Much of our current work focuses on Pacific salmon and trout. These species have great cultural, ecological, economic, and symbolic importance, yet they are threatened by habitat loss and exploitation in commercial, recreational, and tribal fisheries. We are using genomics to better understand biodiversity in Pacific salmon and trout. This information will be used to develop improved conservation, management, and restoration programs.
