Plant scientist wins a UC Davis Innovator of the Year Award

Jorge Dubcovsky, UC Davis Department of Plant Sciences, Howard Hughes Medical Institute

Dubcovsky is a world-renowned wheat breeder and wheat geneticist whose recent innovation has greatly accelerated the study of gene function in wheat. His laboratory developed a gene capture tool and used it to sequence most wheat genes in a collection of 2,700 mutant lines.

Ron Tjeerdema named to NAS committee on dispersants for oil spills

Ronald Tjeerdema, CA&ES Associate Dean for Environmental Sciences, has been named to a select committee for the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) that will evaluate the use of dispersants in future oil spills.

 “I am looking forward to contributing my 30 years of experience in oil spill research,” said Tjeerdema, who is a professor in the Department of Environmental Toxicology and also holds the Donald G. Crosby Endowed Chair in Environmental Chemistry.

Dave Fujino to receive industry accolade

Dave Fujino, executive director of the California Center for Urban Horticulture (CCUH), will be inducted into the Green Industry Hall of Fame on May 20.

CCUH has been under Fujino’s leadership since its founding more than a decade ago. From its headquarters at UC Davis, the organization has been the catalyst for bringing together academia, industry professionals, and public agencies in the horticulture and landscape arena. CCUH workshops promote scientific research and strategies to enhance California’s urban environment.

UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CA&ES) is ranked first in the world in agricultural economics and policy—and among the top 7 in 11 other subjects—in the prestigious Center for World University rankings.

Members of the CA&ES Undergraduate Academic Programs (UAP) team and CA&ES faculty are recipients of an NACADA Region 9 Excellence in Advising award. NACADA, National Academic Advising Association, is a global community for academic advising.

The University of California, Davis, is the greenest university in the world, as declared today (Dec. 29) by the seventh annual GreenMetric ranking from the University of Indonesia.

Dean Dillard gains new term on California State Board of Food and Agriculture.

Gov. Jerry Brown last week reappointed Dean Helene Dillard to the California State Board of Food and Agriculture. Dillard, a UC Davis alumna, has led the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences since 2014.
