Newborn animals herald springtime at UC Davis

A sure sign of spring at UC Davis is in the wind. It’s the sound of newborns in our animal facilities, a tradition that goes back more than a century to the founding of the University Farm when the first calves were born at the campus dairy.

We value a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.

Faculty diversity is an important issue for our college that is receiving some welcome assistance from the State of California in the form of a $2 million budget appropriation to the University of California.

What a wild and wet start to 2017! After years of drought, all the rain and snow of recent weeks is certainly a welcome sight.

You hear it frequently this time of the year. This is the season of giving.

People are more inclined to open their hearts to those in need and to support the causes they believe in. Here in the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, we are indeed fortunate to have alumni and friends who believe strongly in our mission and are willing to give of their time, talent, and treasure to help us better serve our students and society at large.

I love November. The morning air is crisp. Our trees are putting on brilliant displays of color before their leaves rustle and fall to the ground, and next week many of us will be gathering with friends and family for Thanksgiving. We have much to be grateful for here at UC Davis.

Helping farmers balance agricultural and environmental needs

Since its founding more than a century ago, UC Davis has been a catalyst for social change, agricultural progress, and environmental stewardship. We need look no further than the rice fields of Northern California to see a marvelous example of how an industry has evolved, with the university’s help, to further its productivity and to help wildlife.

Welcoming students to campus and the 28th annual College Celebration

After Labor Day, UC Davis prepares for a fresh wave of new and returning students, and indeed, that wave has grown significantly. This fall, the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences will welcome 1,179 freshmen and 918 transfer students. That’s about a 17 percent increase over last year. Campuswide, we expect more than 9,000 new students. 

College revamps communication efforts and wants your input.

In the world of communications at UC Davis, summer is a time for refreshing publications and planning, as well as preparing for the upcoming academic year. We took a hard look at the way our college shares information, brainstormed some new ideas, and began making changes in how we communicate our research and news.
