CA&ES picks up three awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education

The CA&ES College Advancement Team earned three awards at the 2017 District VII regional conference of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) held in San Diego in early March.

Katherine Parpana, an academic counselor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is among the recipients of the 2017 Chancellor’s Achievement Awards for Diversity and Community.

The awards honor achievements by faculty, staff, students, and local citizens who contribute to the development and well-being of UC Davis’ diverse and evolving community.

Advancing Faculty Diversity

CA&ES faculty will grow in both numbers and diversity in 2017.

The UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has received a $600,000 grant from the University of California Office of the President to advance faculty diversity in higher education. The award will boost college efforts already in place to attract and retain faculty from under-represented minorities.

Awards and Honors: Professor Moyle elected as AAAS Fellow

Peter Moyle is among seven faculty members newly elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Seven UC Davis faculty members are included in the newest class of fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS Council recently voted in 391 fellows in all for 2016, in recognition of their efforts to advance science or its applications.

Nutrition lecturer Liz Applegate honored for innovative teaching

UC Davis lecturer Liz Applegate, a nationally renowned expert on nutrition and fitness, has received a teaching award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) at the organization’s annual meeting in November in Austin, Texas.

A Lasting Legacy

Cahill gift of land will benefit the UC Davis Natural Reserve System

For the last 25 years, Tom and Ginny Cahill have owned and enjoyed a beautiful slice of blue oak woodlands and unspoiled riparian forest nestled along the south side of Putah Creek near Lake Berryessa. Now they’re giving it away.

The 196-acre parcel will become the Cahill Riparian Preserve, part of the UC Davis Natural Reserve System. It will be managed by the university in coordination with the new Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument.

Awards and Honors: Agroecologist Amélie Gaudin named “new innovator”

Foundation supports researchers to help expand food availability and sustainable agriculture practices.

Amélie Gaudin, assistant professor of agroecology, has been awarded the 2016 New Innovator in Food and Agriculture Award from the Foundation for Food and Agricultural Research (FFAR).

The award helps fund the work of new faculty and their teams of students and scholars to conduct research with the potential to expand food availability and encourage sustainable agriculture practices.

Student Farm director receives namesake award from Sustainable Agriculture Education Association

Mark Van Horn, director of the UC Davis Student Farm, was awarded the inaugural Mark Van Horn On-Farm Educator Award, established by the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association and presented during the association’s recent biennial conference. 

 

Glenn Young awarded Vietnamese Medal of Honor

Professor has helped develop curriculum in food technology

Department of Food Science and Technology Professor Glenn Young was awarded the Medal of Honor by the government of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The award was received at the recent 60th Anniversary Celebration of Nong Lam University.
