Exceptional Graduates

Seven outstanding students will be honored at the CA&ES commencement ceremonies, to be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, in the UC Davis ARC Pavilion. Tiffany Do will receive the College Medal for scholastic excellence. Valerie Fates and Jessica Jones will receive the Mary Regan Meyer Prize for a demonstrated expertise and an interest in serving humanity. Kat Perkins and Devin Murphy will receive the Charles Hess Community Service Award for outstanding public or community service during their undergraduate years.

Kate Hewett receives Van Alfen/MacDonald Graduate Student Support Fund award

Kathryn (Kate) Hewett is the 2017 recipient of the Neal Van Alfen and James MacDonald Graduate Student Support Fund award for her exemplary research and leadership on the science of estuaries.

“The selection committee was very impressed with her strong academic record and demonstrated commitment of service to the campus and community,” said Helene Dillard, dean of the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

A Whale of a Win

Grad students win Smithsonian Film Award

Emily Miller-a graduate student of Pete Klimley, and Jonathan Rose-Brian Todd's recent Ph.D. student, just won 1 of 3 student film awards at this week's Earth Optimism Summit at the Smithsonian, for their video, "The Gray Whales of the St. Ignacio Lagoon."  The short video they made is remarkable, inspiring and optimistic.

Three to be honored at May 2 reception for outstanding student advising

Emma Martinez, Louie Yang, and Carly Tyer are the 2017 recipients of the Harry and Eleanor Walker Academic Advising Award. They will be honored at a reception May 2 at the Robert Mondavi Institute Sensory Theater.

Congratulations Dave Rizzo!

You could tell that Dave Rizzo was going to be a science guy when he started doing chemistry experiments and growing molds for second- and third-grade show and tell.

But, the fact that science would lead him to square off with one of California’s most destructive forest diseases and help create an entirely new global-disease major at the University of California, Davis, came as a surprise — and to no one more than Rizzo himself.

CA&ES picks up three awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education

The CA&ES College Advancement Team earned three awards at the 2017 District VII regional conference of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) held in San Diego in early March.

Honoring diversity achievements

Katherine Parpana, an academic counselor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is among the recipients of the 2017 Chancellor’s Achievement Awards for Diversity and Community.

The awards honor achievements by faculty, staff, students, and local citizens who contribute to the development and well-being of UC Davis’ diverse and evolving community.

Advancing Faculty Diversity

CA&ES faculty will grow in both numbers and diversity in 2017.

The UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has received a $600,000 grant from the University of California Office of the President to advance faculty diversity in higher education. The award will boost college efforts already in place to attract and retain faculty from under-represented minorities.

Awards and Honors: Professor Moyle elected as AAAS Fellow

Peter Moyle is among seven faculty members newly elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Seven UC Davis faculty members are included in the newest class of fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The AAAS Council recently voted in 391 fellows in all for 2016, in recognition of their efforts to advance science or its applications.

Nutrition lecturer Liz Applegate honored for innovative teaching

UC Davis lecturer Liz Applegate, a nationally renowned expert on nutrition and fitness, has received a teaching award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) at the organization’s annual meeting in November in Austin, Texas.
