A Message from the Dean - June 2017

Commencement is a major milestone for our graduates

Congratulations to the 1,705 undergraduate students who will cross the stage at one of two CA&ES commencement ceremonies on Sunday, June 18. This is a major milestone in their lives.

Our graduates can take pride in their hard-earned accomplishments. Graduating with a UC Davis Bachelor of Science degree will unlock many doors of opportunity for them. And society needs their ambition, creativity, and dedication to improve the lives of people in California, the nation, and the world.

Exceptional Graduates

Seven outstanding students will be honored at the CA&ES commencement ceremonies, to be held at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 18, in the UC Davis ARC Pavilion. Tiffany Do will receive the College Medal for scholastic excellence. Valerie Fates and Jessica Jones will receive the Mary Regan Meyer Prize for a demonstrated expertise and an interest in serving humanity. Kat Perkins and Devin Murphy will receive the Charles Hess Community Service Award for outstanding public or community service during their undergraduate years.

A Whale of a Win

Grad students win Smithsonian Film Award

Emily Miller-a graduate student of Pete Klimley, and Jonathan Rose-Brian Todd's recent Ph.D. student, just won 1 of 3 student film awards at this week's Earth Optimism Summit at the Smithsonian, for their video, "The Gray Whales of the St. Ignacio Lagoon."  The short video they made is remarkable, inspiring and optimistic.

Walker Award

Three to be honored at May 2 reception for outstanding student advising

Emma Martinez, Louie Yang, and Carly Tyer are the 2017 recipients of the Harry and Eleanor Walker Academic Advising Award. They will be honored at a reception May 2 at the Robert Mondavi Institute Sensory Theater.

Congratulations Dave Rizzo!

You could tell that Dave Rizzo was going to be a science guy when he started doing chemistry experiments and growing molds for second- and third-grade show and tell.

But, the fact that science would lead him to square off with one of California’s most destructive forest diseases and help create an entirely new global-disease major at the University of California, Davis, came as a surprise — and to no one more than Rizzo himself.

Honoring diversity achievements

Katherine Parpana, a CA&ES academic counselor, receives a 2017 diversity award from the chancellor.

Katherine Parpana, an academic counselor in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is among the recipients of the 2017 Chancellor’s Achievement Awards for Diversity and Community.

The awards honor achievements by faculty, staff, students, and local citizens who contribute to the development and well-being of UC Davis’ diverse and evolving community.

Advancing Faculty Diversity

CA&ES faculty will grow in both numbers and diversity in 2017.

The UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has received a $600,000 grant from the University of California Office of the President to advance faculty diversity in higher education. The award will boost college efforts already in place to attract and retain faculty from under-represented minorities.
